I have this friend who whenever someone mentions something he hates, he rants about it for several minutes?

No dont say anything to him. Just gradually be busy when he wants to do something. Make new friends. Only if he asks you why , should you tell him why. He most likely wont or cannot change anyway. He has a lot of hostility and you dont need to spend your precious time with toxic persons.
